How do catastrophes change the lives of people?

How does a catastrophe impact the subjective well-being and mental health of people in adjacent areas? Can such effects be given a monetary estimation?

In this talk Natalia Danzer presents her research on the implications of Chernobyl. She discusses implications on political views, mental health, risk-aversion in the affected regions of Ukraine, gives an estimate of their cost, and highlights the connection between well-being of the population and economic growth.
